Snow in Belgrade
We have one hell of a winter. We are into our second snow storm with more than 25 cm of snow in the last three days. While it is beautiful it is one hell of a mess. First, Belgrade does not usually get this much snow of course with an average snowfall is less than 25 cm. So, there is really not the support in place to deal with this much snow. They do salt the road and while they seem remarkably clean, it is a walking city where you need to go to the market, or store or the bar down the street almost daily. This is where it becomes an issue.
While there is like in Boston rules that require the side walks to be cleaned, there is no real enforcement. In Boston you call the 311 app, take a picture of the ice not cleaned up and they are out fining someone who should have done the job. Here not so much. There is also the issue of whose property is this (More on that in a later post)? Many areas are not clearly defined, or no one really know who is the ultimate owner. Unless you live in a post communist building that has formalized some condo fees there is no one really in charge to turn to, to get these sorts of things done.
As the snow slowly melts and then refreezes over night it become more and more treacherous with ice everywhere. This storm will last for the next week for sure with the highs not over 4 C and below 0 C every night. Fun times for sure as we slip, slide away.
