Restoran Stari Mlin
Our favorite traditional Serbian Restaurant in Belgrade, Restoran Stari Mlin (Old Mill), was were we had the adult version of our daughters birthday recently. The owner Dusan became our friend as he is the close friend to our daughters godmother and we have fallen in love with his food and him. This is traditional Serbian food. Thinly sliced meats, cheeses, olives, avar (“ivar” a red bell peppers sauce that has lots of traditions), grilled meats, salads and inventive ways of using various grilled vegetables. A full bar but specializing in the best Serbian wines, beers and of course rakia (Serbian brandy most commonly of plums). It is almost impossible to find as it is on a “no named” road, but near the center of Belgrade. Either a good GPS or a cab, and even the cab drivers may not know.
I have never seen a menu at Stari Mlin. Dusan will tell you what to order and it is best just to let him bring what he has prepared for the day. He sources his meats and vegetables from the very best farms in the area. He knows all his sources personally and has planned the meal based on what is available. There is usually a first course of sliced meats and sausages, olives, pickles and local cheeses. Any meat with pig involved here is going to blow you away. There is often the Serbian salad of cucumber, onions and tomatoes. In the summer the tomatoes from Serbia are some of the best in the world. Then grilled meats including the famous Serbian dish of cevapcici which is a grilled Serbian sausage usually with a blend or beef, pork and or lamb depending on what region of the former Yugoslavia. This is a favorite of my daughters as she gives Dusan the Ella seal of approval with the best cevapici she has ever had…..anywhere.
Go there to be led through courses of traditional Serbia cuisine and experience rakia and Serbian Wine paired perfectly to match he food. The staff is extremely helpful and will answer all your questions. Their english is very good so communication will not be an issue. If you can find the restaurant you will experience one of the gems of Belgrade and expect to have a delightful evening and time.
