American In Serbia

Kalenic

This is our go-to restaurant in the neighborhood. Just a few blocks from our house, it was the second restaurant I visited when I first came to Serbia. I remember it well; we were sitting with a couple I had just met, and fireworks were going off. We ask what was going on and they said Partisan one of the Serbian soccer teams in Belgrade was setting them off. Oh, because they won something, no because the other Belgrade soccer team, Red Star, lost that night. One of the ways Serbs think.

This is a pretty typical Serbian restaurant.  The restaurant gets its name from the Kalenic Market across the street.  They serve Serbian cuisine, grilled meats, stews and several Serbian specialties.  Their prices are very reasonable we can go and drink and eat for under $50 US dollars and usually must take home some of the food.  They have a full bar and sell a very good brand of plum Rakia.  My wife likes the apricot so that is also worth a try and they have two beers on tap.  There is a good wine list of Serbian wines.  As I have said before I would try and stick with the whites, they are going to be more memorable in the end.

One of the best grills in town, they know how to grill to perfection.  We get the chicken wrapped in bacon often and it is perfectly cooked.  So many places way overcook the chicken and it ends up very dry, but this is close to perfectly cooked and we have had it many times so doubtful you would have an issue there.  It is served with chopped onions and french fries.  The cevapcici is excellent as is their deer stew.  My wife has had the grilled vegetables and says the same thing they were perfectly cooked.  If you are a little hungrier you can try the Karađorđeva.  Veal or chicken rolled around kaimak and then breaded and fried.  It is delicious with all that melted cheese for it to soak in.

They make a variety of soups and salads.  We almost always order a šopska Salata (Serbian Salad with cheese) and the shredded cabbage salad.  The cheese on the šopska melts in your mouth and is very creamy.  I have tried the beef soup and is great, but they should replace the meat they used to flavor the soup with some new cuts of meat as the ones in the soup have had all the flavor cooked out of them.  The fish stew is excellent lovely on a cold day.

I recommend if you are in the Vračar municipality of Belgrade perhaps wanting to visit the market and after try some traditional Serbian food the Kalinic is the place to go.
