American In Serbia

Langouste

Most of the Restaurants I review in Belgrade and surrounding areas are traditional Serbia cuisine.  This is what most people want when they come to a foreign country, to try traditional foods, not something they can get at home.  We do have McDonald’s here and KFC and a Big Mac or Fried Chicken does hit the spot now and then, you just won’t see them in any of my reviews.   I do from time to time include some more upscale spots, if you have not read my review for example on Hiša Franko I would recommend the restaurant for sure if you are ever close to Slovenia.  With that in mind as I live in Belgrade and get plenty of traditional Serbian food, whether it is my mothers-in-law or a restaurant across the street we enjoy trying Serbian fine dining and seeing how it is progressing

One of the first fine-dining spots in Serbia that we tried was Langouste and I still think it is the best.  This is an experience that you would find in New York City or towns in France.   The service is impeccable, and food will be a delight to the senses and the view of the river quite a lovely experience.  They are located near the Kalemegdan Fortress with wonderful views of the Sava and Danube Rivers and a wonderful patio in the summer. We always have taken another couple as it is served at a pleasurable pace with beautiful surroundings that make for a quite conversation enjoyable.

There are two parts to their menu, the tasting menu and the A La Carte with a selection of salads, fish, steaks, pasta and of course dessert.  We have always chosen the tasting menu where there are two selections, primarily meat and primarily fish.  There is an optional wine pairing that focuses on local wines, but the wine list also includes Croatian, French, Italian and even some new world wines.  With the pairing, you get a serving of half of glass of wine that usually will go with one or two courses.  You get to try several wines and the pairing is set up differently for the two tastings.

I won’t go into details about the various menu items we have had as it is unlikely that you will experience the same.  The menu changes often as the seasons change and as different items become available.  The current chef Guillaume Iskandar whose restaurant in Paris, Guaranc received a Michelin Star.  There won’t be a star for Langouste as Serbia is not included in a Michelin guide which is a big oversight on their part.  There should be one for the countries in the former Yugoslavia.

This an outstanding gastronomic experience.  If you are in Belgrade for only a couple of days I would recommend trying the Serbian cuisine to get a flavor of the region, but if you are in town for a week or two and enjoy fine dining experiences then I would definitely add Langouste to your list of choices and just between you and me, it is going to be half the price off a tasting menu of similar quality in the US.
