American In Serbia

Matalj Vinarija

We took a trip into Eastern Serbia to do some wine tasting, visit some historical sites and take Ella to a water park and see some of the historical sites. There will be several posts of some of the things you can visit and do there over the next few weeks.  Much of the trip takes you along the Danube towards the border with Romania. Starting with one of the best wineries in Serbia, Matalj Vinarija

It is a fairly new winery and as you can see from the web page has been nicely designed.  It is still under development as they have plans for a bed and breakfast and eventually tasting dinners.  For now, you can go and taste their wine in the tasting room.  They also speak English so makes it easier if you do not speak Serbian.

They have been making wines in the region since Roman times.  The winery is not far from the Daube so you end up with the cool mornings hot afternoons making for the temperature variations that challenge the grapes.  They also have several different vineyards that they target the different varietals to find the best place for each.

One of the best red wines in Serbia

The wines we like were the Sauvignon Blanc which had a very nice acidic balance.  The Kremen Kamen is Cabernet Sauvignon and one of the best red wines in Serbia.  We have had it before, and it holds up well to a nice steak or other meat.  The Thermal rose is a very nice wine with its strawberry flavors that we ate with BBQ chicken.  The Bagrina which is a grape only grown in that region and almost disappeared and the Incense which is a dessert wine that has a wonderful mouthfeel and would go well with chocolate.

You can get more information on the web site.

You do need to schedule a tasting before hand.
