Trash in Belgrade Part 1

I have written in some other post about trash in Belgrade but now having lived in the old town part of the city I have some new thoughts that I would share about trash, how it comes about and how it is taken care of by a legion of workers whose job it is to try and keep the city clean.

The big trash. There are dumpsters every couple of corners throughout the city. They fill up quickly during the day as this is where every apartment and every business drop their trash. Not like Boston where you had a trash room on your floor and the maintenance company comes twice a week to take it to the street. Every day the trash truck comes by to empty the dumpsters. There are modified Segways with a flashing light post and bends on the back for trash and brooms that drive around all day and clean up around the dumpsters picking up the trash that has fallen out.

Every day there is a street sweeper at about the same time going down the big streets cleaning the gutters. We use to call this tow day in Boston because it happened on most streets once a week and if your car was still parked there it was towed and you paid a fine. Revenue for the City of Boston. The street sweeper just tossed the garbage in the curb to the middle of the street the only purpose we could see was to collect the fines for the illegal parking. Here here is a vacuum truck following behind to suck up the debris

Once a week a tanker trunk of water comes down the street as two men with fire hoses wash down the street, cleaning up the sidewalks and the street of anything else that is left.

Keeps Serbia pretty clean.

That is the macro cleaning, more on the micro cleaning coming soon
