Reka Fun by the River

I struggled to decide which restaurant in Belgrade I should write about first. Do I go with my favorite Serbia Restaurant run by a good friend in such an out of the way spot in Belgrade that even cab drivers have problems finding it; my favorite Western style restaurant with a one star Michelin chef with an amazing fixed menu that changes with the season; or the place were we had our Wedding party over looking the Danube in Zemun. The romantic in me (and fearing the wrath of my wife) decided on Reka with its spectacular views of the river, outstanding service and delightful menu of river fish locally sourced.

Reka meaning river is just steps from the Danube, in the up stream most part of the river in Zemun as the river rushes to meet the Sava before the trip to the Black Sea. Zemun use to be a separate city from Belgrade, when Belgrade was the city on the other side of he river, but now it is incorporated into Belgrade proper along with New Belgrade.

You go to Reka for the fun. The fresh fresh fish is outstanding, and I would recommend asking the server what is best for the night. The different grilled fish are some of the best from the rivers in Belgrade. If you go during the day, unless to a party you do not get the full flavor of Reka, but at night the place comes alive. You will have the traditional Serbian folk music with everyone in the restaurant knowing all the words to the songs, singing and dancing in the aisles. This is the best of Serbian nights on the river as there are people there from all ages eating and having a great time. Not the disco parties of the younger crowd that you can find on the river clubs.

If you go on the weekend be sure to make a reservation and just be aware as my other post mention, anytime you go in the winter to a traditional Serbian restaurant there will still be cigarette smoke. You will not go wrong with any of the fish dishes as they are fresh and cooked perfectly. They also have fish soups that are very good. There are the typical Serbian grilled meats, but go for the fish as you will not find many spots that can match their river fish. Salads, I always recommend the Shopska Salad, a traditional Serbian salad of tomatoes, onion, cucumbers and salty white cheese.

Reka is open 7 days a week from 12 pm to 2:00 am but if you go often 7 or 8 plan on making a reservation. You will be impressed with the friendly staff that are very helpful. There is a fully bar and a extended wine list.
